Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.
Our keynote speaker, Dr Stephen Druggan from Jakarta International School used the above quote from Wayne Gretzky, my Canadian friends tell me he is probably one of the greatest hockey players ever. (notice I didnt call it ice hockey? 😉 ) Anyway, Dr Stephen made a really nice link between our conference theme of 21st Century Learning and that quote, I think it is quite powerful. The idea being that we need to be thinking about where our schools will be in the future, not trying to play catch up.
Dr Stephen also talked about some of the best elements of the PYP (Exhibition) and the MYP (Personal Project) and also the most challenging (Assessment). He also gave us an interesting reading list that links to his themes of Emotional Intelligence, Grit and Feedback. Books such as ‘Mindset’ written by Carol S. Dweck, ‘How Children Succeed’ by Paul Tough, ‘Search Inside Yourself’ by Chade-Meng Tan, and ‘Visible Thinking for Teachers’.
Slightly over 650 people attended today, the buzz was amazing. (and at 150Rp it is most certainly the cheapest IB PD or conference around. Period.) We had reps from ManageBac and reps from Turnitin.com.
A very big thank-you to Sekolah Pelita Harapan for hosting, despite the flooding that occurred the night before at their school!
